Retreat Information

In the Buddhist tradition of the Venerable Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, six monastics from the Blue Cliff Monastery ( will be on tour in Canada in the month of May 2017. As part of this tour, they will be leading a weekend residential retreat at St Paul University, Ottawa Ontario from May 12-14, 2017 to guide us in the the art of mindful living, in the practices of sitting meditation, the 5 Mindfulness Trainings, total relaxation, touching the earth and the practices of deep listening and loving speech.

Who Will Enjoy This Retreat

The retreat welcomes beginners as well as experienced meditators. There is no separate programming for youth. However, 12 to 17 year olds are welcome to register if accompanied by an adult.


The retreat will be held at St Paul University, Room L120, 233 Main St. Ottawa, Ontario.


At St Paul University, there is public parking off the Hazel St entrance. The hourly rate is $3 up to 60 minutes. Daily maximum is $10. (subject to change). Pay and Park machines accept coins, Visa and MasterCard.

Street parking is available on the surrounding streets west and south of the St Paul University. However, keep in mind parking is prohibited in excess of 3 hours between 7am and 7pm seven days a week unless otherwise posted.


As of April 20th, accommodation that had once been available for the retreat at the Residence and Conference Centre, is now FULL.

Participants from out of town will need to make other private arrangements for accomodation. You could consider the Residence and Conference Centre – Ottawa West on the Algonquin Campus at Baseline and Woodroofe (1385 Woodroofe Ave Ottawa). It is the same set up as the St Paul Residence and Conference Centre (a suite with with two rooms) It takes about 15-20 minutes to get from there to St Paul. Price is $125 per night. Parking is included.

Cost of the Retreat

The retreat is non-residential and the cost of the retreat is separate from the accommodation costs.

Up to and including April 7, 2017 the non-residential retreat fee is $179.
On or after April 8, 2017 the non-residential retreat fee is $199

Payment is made on-line by Paypal or Interac to the ottawapagodasangha@gmail address.

Accommodation for 2 nights in a suite with two people is approximately $109 plus tax. All arrangements and payment are with the St. Paul Residence and Conference Centre.

Total cost for the residential retreat is in the range of $299 – $332 depending on date of registration.

Cancellation Policy

A full refund for the retreat will be provided if you withdraw before April 28, 2017. After that date we are unable to provide a refund because of our committed costs to St. Paul University.

Financial Assistance/Donations

On the registration form, you will be given the opportunity to offer financial assistance towards the fees of other retreatants. Financial assistance to retreatants will be provided on a limited basis by request.

Also, the registration form provides you with an opportunity to offer dana/donation to the monastics of Blue Cliff Monastery for their teachings.


Please plan to arrive between 3.00 – 6.30 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2017 for registration for the retreat in Room L130, 233 Main St. Ottawa and room check-in at the St Paul Residence and Conference Centre, 150 Hazel Street, Ottawa Ontario, K1S 5T8.

A guided meditation will be offered between 4.00 – 5.00 pm in Room L120 designed for those new to meditation. We strongly encourage you to attend especially if you have little or no experience with meditation.


On Friday evening, May 12, you are invited to join other retreatants and buy your dinner at the Green Door Restaurant, 198 Main St, Ottawa between 5.15 – 6.30 pm.

On Saturday May 13 and Sunday May 14, the St Paul Residence and Conference Centre provides a modest breakfast as part of the accommodation cost. There is a fridge and microwave in the suite if you wish to bring food and prepare your own breakfast or snacks.

Saturday lunch and dinner and Sunday lunch will be provided as part of the retreat fee.   Healthy vegan meals will be offered and enjoyed in noble silence. Please note any serious dietary allergies on your registration information. We will do our best to accommodate however our meal choices are limited.

Retreat Protocols

  • As some people are particularly sensitive to scents and chemicals, you are asked not to bring or use any perfumes or scented toiletries.
  • Please wear modest attire, i.e. simple dress that covers the shoulders and knees
  • Please arrive by 10 minutes before the start of morning sitting to help maintain a beautiful peaceful practice.
  • We will support each other in the practice of noble silence from evening meditation on Friday until after the Ceremony of the Transmission of the 5 Mindfulness Trainings on Sunday morning.
  • Retreatants are requested to refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol during the entire retreat and to practice the Five Mindfulness Trainings in order to support the creation of a safe and healthy environment. The Five Mindfulness Trainings are guidelines that support us in realizing our aspiration of living a meaningful and happy life in a spirit of nonharming.

What to Bring

  • Meditation cushion (a limited number of cushions will be available; chairs will also be available)
  • Sweater or coat for outdoor walking meditation
  • Water bottle
  • Yoga mat or blanket to lie on for deep relaxation
  • For those staying at the Residence and Conference Centre towels and sheets are provided
